So you child is going to high school...now what?
There are answers to common questions below, but if you have any other questions please go to the CONTACT page and send an email!
PAYMENTS
Any payments for band related things should be made out to: TRUMAN BAND. This includes band camp, fundraisers, uniform fees...anything! Please only submit checks or money orders - this is for you safety.
MARCHING BAND
It is a class! Students will receive 1 credit and it will be listed on their schedule as a 6th class. This class meets on a separate schedule than normal classes. The schedule is available in the CALENDAR page. Marching band has nothing to do with Varsity or Symphonic Band. The marching band is based on attendance. Missing anything (rehearsal or performance) lowers your grade. Conflicts must be dealt with in advance...NOT the day of the conflict. Check the marching band link for more information including the band camp book - which has lots of information.
VARSITY OR SYMPHONIC BAND?
All band students should be enrolled in Varsity Band their first year. After the first year in band each student is eligible to enter Symphonic Band if the director feels they are ready. Criteria to be in Symphonic Band: excel at playing an instrument, have an A or B in Varsity Band, be mentally ready to deal with much more difficult music, have good practice habits, be willing to do what it takes to get the job done!
JAZZ BAND
You must play a standard jazz instrument (Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano, Vibraphone). This is a more advanced music class focusing on learning how to improvise. Concerts will be held in the 3rd trimester (possibly 2nd trimester too!). This course entails lots of music theory and practice time required. Students interested in Jazz Band should contact Mr. Cassell.
PEP BAND
The pep band is made up of members of varsity, jazz and symphonic band. This IS a part of the varsity or symphonic band grade. We usually perform at 7 or 8 home games. Students are allowed to miss one game without question or penalty. More than one absence will result in loss of points. Students are required to sign-in at each game to be considered present. T-Shirts are available at the beginning of the season for the cost of $10. T-Shirts are optional and not required (but we do look cool when we all wear them!). The pep band has been invited to Ann Arbor the past few years to perform for the University of Michigan's Volleyball team and for their Women's Basketball team. Our pep band rocks!
